Notes: Hosting: This service provides a network server (internet) to serve content (the web pages people see) to veiwers. The server is accessed by it's numeric address via any browser eg: "http://209.85.229.99/" unless a Domain Name is linked to the server (see below) Domain Names: These provide a more memorable means of accessing or searching for internet content (easier to remember than). Domain Names (eg: Google.com) are not strictly neccessary to have an internet presence and search engine entries (numeric address can be sufficent), but they help a great deal. DNS (Domain Name Server): This is a seperate server (possibly at a different location) that enables any number of Domain Names (eg: Google.com) to display any servers content, it simply links Domain Names to one or more Numeric Addresses which can also be at different locations. eMail Services: Mail servers provide email services and enable the sending and receiving of email, they are not the same thing as a content server (Hosting) and may operate independantly and in another location (DNS is often used to designate any mail servers required). |
